ALFACALCIDOL
Mechanism of Action
It is 1a-hydroxycholecalciferol;
it is the synthetic derivative of vitamin D3
It is a prodrug that is rapidly
hydroxylated in the liver to active calcitriol
Mechanism of action is similar to
vitamin D and it is useful in renal bone diseases
Indications
Renal osteodystrophy, Vitamin D
resistant rickets and Vitamin D dependant rickets, hypoparathyroidism and
osteoporosis
Dosage
Adults: 1-2mcg per day
Children: 0.05mcg per day
Contraindications
Hypercalcemia
Special Precautions
Watch for hypercalcemia
Adverse Drug Reactions
